On Tuesday amid the nationwide strike by organised labour, the president directed Edun to submit a proposal for a new minimum wage figure and an analysis of the associated costs to be incurred within 48 hours.
On Thursday, 6th June 2024, some media outlets reported that the minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, Wale Edun has proposed N105,000 as the new national minimum wage in the proposal submitted to President Bola Tinubu for consideration.
Within hours, the claim has been circulated across social media platforms and reported by some media outlets. This prompted DailyAgent Check to verify the claim.
Verification
DailyAgent Check conducted searches on the official handles and website of the Presidency as well as spokespersons to the President and found that the claim was false.
Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to President Tinubu said “The Honorable Minister of Finance and coordinating minister of the economy, Wale Edun has not proposed N105,000 minimum wage. The contrary story being disseminated is false.”
According to a report by the Africa Independent Television (AIT), organised labour said it is not aware of the N105,000 proposal on new minimum wage reportedly sent to the President by the finance minister.
Some of the media outlets that reported the story have issued a statement, noting that the story was incorrect and has been deleted.
