The Background
Our search revealed that there was a memo that suggested that Google was planning to sunset its electronic message platform, Gmail.
According to Statista, Gmail is the world’s most popular email service with more than 1.5bn active users globally.
The memo titled ‘Google is sunsetting Gmail’ was the reason for the claim as posted by X users around the world with over 2,500 comments, 3,400 retreats, and 10,500 likes, as of Monday, February. 26, 2024.
“As of August 1, 2024, Gmail will officially be sunsetted, marking the end of the service. This means that as of this date, Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving or storing emails,” part of the memo reads.
The Verification
DailyAgent Check performed a search on Google platforms including its Gmail X handle and discovered that it had countered the claim with the phrase “Gmail is here to stay” on February 22, 2024, at 11:37 p.m.
According to BBC, the memo was a hoax which appears to be based on a real email sent by Google in 2023. It notified people that Gmail would stop access to its most basic HTML view.
The Verdict
